I tried to narrow down my favorite horror movies to 10, but found I could not do it. I need catagories. One for slasher, one for zombies, one for vamps…. you get the idea. So I’ve decided to create my favorite “lists.”

My first list is Slasher Movies. After all, who doesn’t love a deranged killer cutting up teenagers at every turn? My favorites are (in no particular order):

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2003 - Leatherface as his chainsaw best, with a convincing cast of misfit teens, realistic blood and a promise of flesh for dinner. This version is guaranteed to give you nightmares!

2. Prom Night, 1980 - in this early Jamie Lee Curtis film, a group of high schoolers prepare for their big prom while someone else prepares for a killing spree. This movie embodies what slasher films are all about, full of blood, screaming sex starved teens, and a surprise ending.

3. Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984 - Nothing is worse than a psycho scorned, and a phantom child killer, Freddie Krueger proves that revenge is truly the best medicine as he deliberately slays the offspring of the group of people who murdered him. What’s worse is that he tortures and kills them in their sleep, which also kills them in real life!

halloween.jpg4 & 5. Halloween, 1978 & Halloween, 2007 -The original Halloween has always been a favorite. Definitely ranking in my top ten. Then I saw Rob Zombie’s version. Michael Myers has never been scarier and more convincing as a deranged child sociopath. The only difference is that you actually might feel a little sorry for him.

6. Scream, 1996 - After a couple of teenagers are brutally slain, a seemingly peaceful town becomes a place where no one is safe and everyone is a suspect. A group of offbeat high schoolers, a reporter, and a Fife-ish like cop try to nab the killer and get caught up in blood bath instead! This movie embodies everything an awesome cheesy slasher movie should be.

7. Friday the 13th, 1980 - Mysterious deaths keep happening after a boy mysteriously drowns at Camp Crystal Lake, causing it to be shut down. Several years later however, someone gets the bright idea to open it back up. Now, full with life and teens experimenting with their sexuality, they begin to die, and not without a lot of blood shed. A definite classic in the genre!

8. The Funhouse, 1981 - Four teenagers get the bright idea to spend the night in a carnival funhouse, and in doing so witness a brutal murder. Suddenly they find that not only are they not alone in the funhouse, but they are trapped as the deformed killer hunts them, one by one. This movie is guaranteed to make you afraid of the darkness!

9. April Fools Day, 1986 - What could be more fun than spending a weekend partying in an awesome mansion with 8 of your buddies? Well - staying alive perhaps but between the pranks and the occasionally murder, who can know for sure? This movie is both bloody and fun!

10. Wrong Turn, 2003 - What could be worse than being trapped in the woods of West Virginia as disfigured cannibals hunt you as food for their dinner? Getting caught. This movie shows you exactly what happens if you are one of the unlucky ones. Another lesson learned is to stay on the interstate, even in traffic jams.

Well, there it is. My list of favorite top 10 slasher movies. I know there are more I could easily add to the list and I would love to hear what you guys think or which ones I may have forgotten about. I’d love for you to add to the list in my comments - not to mention I’m always looking for horror movies I have not yet seen.

Oh and cheesy B titles are a bonus!

Ah, The Funhouse was such a fun movie. I remember watching that when I was younger when it was on late night TV, and it started freaking me out.
I long for times like that again.

I would occasionally rent some of the old movies I remember scaring the bejesus out of me as a kid, only to be let down in the scare department, but amused by the way special effects used to be so awful! Anyway you “slice” it, I still love those movies.
