unclefesterhasanelectrifyingpersonality.jpgI left work early today. Got a nice little head cold with sinus congestion that makes my throat feel like sand paper and my head feel like its being squished in a vice. Much like the vice Uncle Fester used to use to get rid of his headaches.

The only difference is Fester liked it.

So while I was lying here on the couch, fighting my four dogs for the one pillow I had propped under my head, I surfed the world wide web, stumbled sites, posted comments & dropped Entrecards. I even subscribed to a couple RSS feeds.

Then I ran across a post of particular fancy. The subject? Star Trek.

Yup. I said it. Star Trek. Now I know its not horror so it’s not completely related to my blog, however it is definitely “B” and that translates to primo subject matter. And I’m not talking about the wannabe Trekkies with their Next Generation or Voyager cast, either. I am talking the real mccoy, the mac daddy, the entire 79 original episodes of Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk.

I owned all 79 episodes - store bought VHS; that’s how much of a geek I was (am?). I even went to the premiere Dragon*con convention in Atlanta Georiga in 1987. Granted it was mostly about comics and graphic novels at that time, but costumes worn by fellow Star Trek and Star Wars fans were amazing! I never knew weird until that weekend. I didn’t dress up, though. I was probably the only one who didn’t.

I have been trying to narrow my favorite Star Trek episode down to one, two tops, but am finding it rather difficult. Of course there as the media favorites, such as The Menagerie, and The Trouble with Tribbles; Mirror Mirror and I, Mudd. I loved them all.

big-gorn-and-kirk.jpgBut I also loved the less publicized, less commercialized episodes. Such as Arena - where Captain Kirk gets to fight a Gorn (a cold-blooded, humanoid reptile with advanced starships, transporter technology, and disruptor weapons) to the death, Roman style. Looking at the Gorn now, I don’t know how it could ever frightened me but I remember fearing for poor Captain Kirk’s life. Come on Scotty - beam him up already!!!!

Another one of my favorite is The Cage. This less known episode was only available via DVD and featured Captain Pike, the predecessor to Captain Kirk. It was decided by the Talosians (a strong race who, after decades of illusory indulgence, has physically atrophied) that Captain Pike would do well to serve as stud service for their dying planet. He unfortunately did not agree.

Then of course, we have A Piece of the Action. Here we find Kirk at his acting best (haha) when he and his crew war with a 1920’s type gangster world. There’s nothing like seeing a Vulcan play a tough guy with a pistol-a.

I could go on and on about more of my favorite episodes, but I’d rather hear some of yours.

Star Trek anyone???

The Cage was one of my favorites too.

My absolute favorite Star Trek episode… jeez, that’s nearly impossible to answer. I’ll say first, I’m a little insulted by being called a wanna-be for being a fan of the other four series, but it’s okay, I understand. TOS is the original, and that makes it special. It doesn’t really deserve B status, though, because the production cost and special effects were top-notch for the day… at least for the first two seasons. It’s gotta be between Mirror MIrror and Obsession, I’d have to say (Obsession is the one where Kirk runs around trying to get revenge on a killer cloud creature he can’t kill). Anyway, I loved the article and I appreciate a writer with such a specific blog topic venturing out into other territory.

Capt Logan - I should probably apologize for the “wanna-be” comment. Actually, I kinda liked the Voyager (?) series - isn’t that the one with Sam from Quantum Leap? I did not like the one with Captain Picard and Data but I think I am one of the few who didn’t.

I remember Obsession - the Vampire Cloud - I loved that one! And thanks for the kudos on my blog. Its nice to see there are others out there who appreciate this stuff (aside from me)
