The Underworld: it’s not just sex & drugs out there….

Hidden deep within our society exist beings and creatures that would blow our minds. Are they real or mythical? One could go on for days about our society's monsters that feed on the innocent - pedophiles, rapists, even con-artists; but those aren't the kind of monsters I refer to.

I'm talking about vampires and werewolves.

In The Underworld, sexy Kate Beckensale plays vampire warrior Selene, aka, a "death dealer," who has devoted her existence to ridding the world of an ancient species of werewolves known as "lycans" whom she believes responsible for brutally taking her family away from her.

Selene thought she had her world figured out by dedicating her existence to killing lycans and using their bodies to conduct experiments in ensuring their demise. It would seem they have evolved so that merely shooting them with silver bullets doesn't always do the trick.

Enter equally sexy Scott Speedman who plays Dr. Michael Corvin, a mortal who manages to get himself tangled up in the centuries old war that has waged between vampires and lycans. Apparently he's always in the wrong place at just the right time for bloodshed. Perhaps there's a reason??

Cause & Effect

On a routine hunt, Selene observes the lycans taking great notice in mere mortal Dr. Michael Corvin, and is determined to find out why. In doing so, she encounters Lucian, leader of the lycans, long believed to have been killed by the vampire superior Kraven, and Selene realizes that her world is not what she believes it to be.

Selene feels the only one who can make things right is her sire, Viktor, and begins the process of reviving him from his 200 year slumber. Her disregard of the vampire way is not without consequence however, and soon a chain reaction of events begins that will change her world forever.

Result

Michael ends up bitten by Lucien, sealing his fate as a lycan, and Selene struggles with her inner demons as she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. The joining of vampire and lycan is highly forbidden, not to mention a slap in the face to Kraven, who is insanely in love with Selene, and insists she be reign by his side as the leaders of the vampires.

With the realization of Lucian being alive, a blatant betrayal made by Kraven, the lycans holding more numbers than the vampires having thought, and the reanimation of Viktor, the vampire elder who sired Selene, a faceoff becomes unavoidable as the vampire enemies no longer seem to come from withOUT but rather from withIN, as the centuries of betrayal and lies become exposed and the joining of vampire Selene and lycan Michael become inevitable, exposing the core of the ancient war yet again.

Conclusion

Underworld takes romance, revenge, bloodshed, and incredible storyline, and wraps it all up into two hours of excitement.

For starters, the graphics are nothing short of incredible. The transformation from man to werewolf, the ample blood spewage, the special effects resulting from bullets of liquid silver and "capsuled" sunlight, to the simplicity of vampires eyes turning an ice blue just before the fangs sink in.....

The story line is also very intriguing. The concept of joining the two breeds and the resistance posed by the more "uptight society" of vampires almost mirrors our society today and the many who oppose lifestyles they do no understand.

Recommendation

If you are a fan of vampires or werewolves, love stories or stories of revenge; if you like blood shed and realistic graphics, then this movie is a must as it will satisfy all your cravings.
