Update on Broken Ankle

So as a couple of you know, I broke my ankle on my first day of the new job. I appear to be one of the lucky ones tho, not needing surgery or pins or screws…. as long as everything goes well and I don’t do anything stupid to mess it up.

Fast forward a week into wearing a wonderfully ornate plaster cast in a flattering shade of blue. Motoring around on crutches, my left leg (the good leg) starts aching in the knee. Within another week the pain is so intense that it buckled on me and I fell. Kinda twisted the broken ankle. Thinking that’s probably a bad thing……

With the knee pain growing progressively worse that even touching it brings me to tears, I end up in a wheelchair for two weeks. An x-ray of the knee causes speculation that I may have torn my Meniscus cartilage, and have to have an MRI to confirm.

This all happens at the 3 week mark. It’s also at this time when my orthopedist tells me I am healing nicely and I can start putting weight on my ankle. YEH! I can lose the wheelchair and crutches if I can use both legs to walk! I feel like I’ve been liberated.

As of today its been one month and 3 days since I broke my ankle. Already I am ready to kill something if I don’t get the frickin’ cast off my leg. How some people can wear these things for 6, 8, and even 12 weeks without going postal blows my mind.

I’ve managed to figure out at what point I need to sit down and chill before my left knee goes haywire, and my ankle, although encased in a nasty smelling cast (yes I’ve gotten it wet and yes I know I wasn’t supposed to… geeez…) seems to be getting stronger. With this ammo, I am determined to have my doctor remove the disgusting cast and give me a removable boot.

He does. But after x-raying my leg with the cast off (WOW was that disgusting) I think he regretted his decision. Two things were discovered today. Two bad things.

The first bad thing is that I do not have a torn Meniscus; I have a stress fracture….. a stress fracture in my good leg.

The second thing is that my ankle is not healing as quickly as it should. In fact it’s barely healing at all; still swollen and still somewhat bruised. And if is keeps progessing at this pace, I will have to be awarded a designer plate and screws….

So I had to promise my doctor that I would use my crutches for the next two weeks and put no more than 50% of my weight on my ankle in order not to have a plaster cast again it (I would promise just about anything for that!) and do whatever I can to avoid surgery. That would suck.

Did I say two bad things? Make that 3 - the third being that I will not be able to ride my beloved Sporty at Myrtle Beach Bike Week this year since I will still be in a cast. Granted a boot cast, but a cast no less. I suppose it’s worth the price to avoid surgery but it won’t be the same.

I think my Sporty might start feeling abandoned…..

Geez, sounds like if it weren’t for bad luck, you wouldn’t have any luck at all.

Sorry to hear about the leg(s)… Not a good combo — hopefully the crutches and staying off your ankle and knee will help things heal better!

I am sorry your ankle is still not healing properly!

You must be really pissed off with it all.
